Is it science or art? Fifth-graders explore kinetic connections
The fifth-grade Art Club students were inspired by a visit to the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts where they saw artist Charley Friedman’s kinetic sculpture called Science Project.
After answering questions to figure out what materials to use for their sculpture, how to balance it and how it would transform when it moved, each of the students used their imaginations and some skills for their constructions.
Joined by Karen Levitov, director and curator for the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts, and Stony Brook University art students, the fifth-graders wrote art words and science words and learned their relationship as they each created a piece of artwork that depended on movement for its effect.
