Research Interests

My research revolves around the evolution of sociality and social behavior in nonhuman primates with digressions into life history theory, reproductive seasonality, taxonomy, and research methods (e.g., data accuracy, reproducibility).

I have conducted laboratory research on South American callitrichid monkeys (primarily common marmosets, Callithrix jacchus) as well as fieldwork on Nepal Gray langurs (Semnopithecus schistaceus) in Southern Nepal and on Phayre’s leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus) in Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Northeastern Thailand.

With support from NSF, data have been collected in Thailand on the weather, forest ecology, and behavior of 4 habituated groups of Phayre’s leaf monkeys. This includes: (i) temperature (since 2001) and rainfall (since 2003), (ii) forest composition (33 botanical plots, each 50x50 m), (iii) phenology (546 trees and lianas, checked monthly, 2004-2007), (iv) nutritional content and mechanical properties of more than 170 food items, (v) behavioral observations at the group (ranging, activity & heights via 30 min scan sampling; 2003-2007) and individual level (20 min focal sampling combining continuous and 1 min instantaneous recording), adult and juvenile individuals, since 2003), (vi) demography and life history, and (vii) genetics.
