Congratulating Sera Lee, PhD candidate who was awarded a $25,000 International Doctoral Degree Fellowship from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for 2024-2025. The award selection was based on scholarly excellence, original research contributions, and a commitment to the support of other women/girls through their research, professional work, or in their communities.

Anthony Szema, MD, FCCP,  FACAAI, FAAAAI, FACP, ATSF, was invited to participate in a briefing at the Pentagon on September 9, 2024. Convened by Denis McDonough, Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, with the Department of Defense, this briefing discussed approximately 15,000 U.S. Veterans getting sick post deployment to Karshi Khannand or K2 airbase in Uzbekistan, which is a Soviet-era airbase used by American soldiers to enter Afghanistan during the war on terror.  Read more here.

Understanding the Role of Social Norms in Recycling Behavior: A New York City Study funded by EREF

The study was spearheaded by Elizabeth Hewitt, Ph.D., an Associate Professor at Stonybrook University.  She presented an EREF Science Session: Unwrapping Recycling in NYC for the Holidays discussing her research and results.

CSTEP and STEP Programs Celebrate 35 + years of Promoting College Success (May 2023)


Professor David Tonjes, Yiyi Wang, Sameena Manzur, Sagarika Srivastava and Firman Firmansyah attended the Global Waste Management Symposium in Palm Springs, CCA, from February 15-17, 2022. Yiyi Wang presented her paper “Trees and the Forest” on methods to compare waste characterization studies and Firman Firmansyah presented his paper “Determining variation in waste generation” which described trends in daily, seasonal, and annual waste generation.


Sameena Manzur, Yiyi Wang and David Tonjes attended the New York State Association for
Solid Waste Management (NYSASWM) fall meeting on landfill technologies at Clayton, NY
September 26-28, 2021. They had an exhibitor table for the Waste Data and Analysis Center in
support of the New York State solid waste characterization project.


Matthew Johnston, Mark Meigher, Sagarika Srivastava, and Yiyi Wang and Sameena Manzur do research from the Waste Data and Analysis Center and traveled to Walton, NY, September 19-22, 2021, to characterize solid waste and recyclables in the Delaware County system.
