Stony Brook University Honored with 2021 Tree Campus USA Designation from the Arbor Day Foundation
Stony Brook University was recently named a 2021 Tree Campus Higher Education Institution
for the ninth consecutive year. Tree Campus Higher Education, a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation, honors colleges and
universities, and their leaders, for promoting healthy trees and engaging students
and staff in the spirit of conservation.
To obtain this distinction, Stony Brook University met the five core standards for
effective campus forest management, including establishing a tree advisory committee,
creating a campus tree care plan, dedicating annual expenditures for that campus tree
program, observing Arbor Day, and sponsoring student service learning projects.
Alaina Claeson, Horticulturist/Landscape Coordinator at Stony Brook University commented,
“We are honored by this distinction from the Arbor Day Foundation as it supports the
University’s commitment towards sustainability and recognizes the efforts that our
Campus Operations & Maintenance teams put forth each year to maintain the University’s
green spaces. We are consistently striving to create outdoor spaces that welcome visitors
and future Seawolves, provide refuge and comfort to current students, faculty and
staff, and provide an oasis for alumni when they return to campus."
