Interests: Environmental History, Nineteenth-Century United States, History of Water, Property, Borderlands, and Place
My dissertation explores how water was a key site of Indigenous sovereignty and US colonialism in the nineteenth century Midwest. In particular, I am interested in the aquatic contest of sovereignty and territory between Indigenous and US peoples that preceded federal US hydraulic projects in the region. I am also interested in how nineteenth-century histories can engage with the current climate crisis, how bodily senses are mediated through historical processes, and how to approach the relationship between humanity and ‘deep time.’
