Soliciting submissions of Clinical and Translational Science Research Projects for inclusion in Stony Brook University’s upcoming NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Proposal
The purpose of this Request for Applications is to identify a Clinical and Translational Science Research Project that will become part of Stony Brook University’s upcoming CTSA proposal. We are eliciting interest through this limited competition process. If you are interested in applying, you must submit a pre-application through the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) internal competitions submission portal. Pre-application requirements are listed in the announcement below.
The Long Island Network for Clinical and Translational Science (LINCATS) at Stony Brook University is applying to be a Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) via funding through the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) CTSA funding mechanism.
LINCATS, with administrative support from OVPR, invites pre-applications for Clinical and Translational Science Research Projects to be included in Stony Brook University’s upcoming CTSA proposal. The CTSA program is designed to develop and implement innovative solutions that will improve the efficiency, quality, and impact of the process for turning observations in the laboratory, clinic, and community into interventions that improve the health of individuals and communities. The selected project will be a discrete research project that addresses a truly significant roadblock in clinical and translational science (CTS). [What is translational science?] The research project should not only address a translational research question in a particular disease or intervention development/dissemination context but also provide a generalizable CTS innovation or insight that can be applied to other translational research projects and thereby increase the overall efficiency or effectiveness of translation. Research program priority areas include (but are not restricted to): Health equities and disparities; dissemination and implementation; equity in research participation; and social determinants of health.
One or more clinical and translational science research project(s) will be selected to move forward as part of the NIH submission. Budgets will vary between $125,000 to $250,000 per year for two to three years or longer, depending on the project’s scope.
Research project leaders will become a critical part of an upcoming NIH CTSA proposal, headed by Dr. Anissa Abi-Dargham as PI, which includes over 60 Stony Brook researchers and in partnership with Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. This effort complements a structure that includes a postdoctoral training program, community engagement, and a pilot award program.
If you are interested in applying as a Clinical and Translational Science Research Project, you must submit the internal competitions form by Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Pre-applications for internal review and selection must be uploaded to the portal as a single PDF document. The competition code for this program is LC202436. Please see below for details.
WHAT DOES IT FUND?: The expertise, resources, and infrastructure of the CTSA Program facilitate innovation and provide support for all scientific/medical communities engaged in CTS research, including disease and condition-specific research supported by NIH Institutes and Centers. The proposed Clinical and Translational Science Research Project should address a truly significant roadblock in CTS that, if successful, would have a generalizable application.
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: No restrictions. This internal competition is open both internally to Stony Brook University researchers across all schools and colleges, as well as Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Northport Veterans Administration Medical Center researchers. Research collaborations between these institutions are encouraged.
PROJECT BUDGET: In the proposal to NIH, the Clinical and Translational Science Research Project will include funds for personnel, research, and other expenses, as appropriate.
TARGET SUBMISSION DEADLINE TO NIH/NCATS: September 1, 2024. If your project is selected to move forward with the proposal, you will be required to submit a full draft (3 to 6 pages) of your Research Strategy to the LINCATS leadership team by July 7, 2024.
A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:
- Abstract (no more than one page) of the Clinical and Translational Science Research Project that describes:
- The overall focus of the project.
- Specific Aims, rationale, and how the project will provide generalizable innovations or insights that increase the overall efficiency or effectiveness of translation.
- A plan for dissemination of successful project outcomes; include a proposed impact statement should the project ultimately be successful.
- List of key personnel with a brief description (1-2 sentences) of each investigator's expertise as it relates to the research project.
Additional Information/Questions
The LINCATS leadership team will host a virtual town hall to discuss the program and
provide details on what types of research projects will be considered. This event
will take place on May 15, 2024 at 10 am. Register for the event.
