Campus Events and Activities Guide as a Resource for Academic Activities
August 15, 2024
Dear Stony Brook Faculty,
A new academic year awaits us, presenting the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, welcome cohorts of new students and faculty, and build upon progress made in previous years. We will reach out with many messages in the coming weeks to share reminders, resources, and opportunities that are aimed at supporting our community in their varied academic pursuits.
Yesterday, President McCormick shared the Stony Brook University Guide for Campus Events/Activities and Demonstrations. These guidelines, which are sourced from existing Stony Brook policy, are designed to enable use of campus facilities and support free expression for all community members while allowing Stony Brook to deliver its core mission of teaching, research, service, and patient care. We encourage you to make sure you’ve reviewed this guide.
We expect these guidelines will be helpful across a variety of academic activities, including hosting events and maintaining regular classroom activity. If you have questions as you consult these guidelines and review their application to academic activities, the Provost’s Office, the Office of the Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine, and Dean’s Offices are prepared to provide assistance and answer any questions throughout the year.
In the year ahead, it is inevitable that international conflicts and a charged election season will draw focus. It is incumbent upon us all to maintain a rigorous, supportive, and safe environment at Stony Brook that promotes intellectual discovery and personal growth as we navigate challenging, complex, and deeply personal topics. We appreciate how thoughtfully Stony Brook faculty approach their classes, research collaborations, and relationships with students, colleagues, and staff. Thank you for all that you do to sustain our community.
Sincerely,
Carl Lejuez
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
William Wertheim
Executive Vice President for Stony Brook Medicine
