Silvia Gao (MA, 2024)
Silvia Gao’s journey to marine conservation took an unexpected and inspiring route. Born and raised in China, Silvia initially pursued an undergraduate degree in teaching Chinese as a second language. Later, she worked as a consultant and project manager while learning a masters degree in Information Systems Management. Although this path had little connection to the ocean, Silvia’s passion for marine science eventually led her to change direction and enroll in the MCP program at Stony Brook University. In 2024, she graduated with her MCP degree, ready to make her mark in the field.
During her time in the Marine Conservation and Policy program, Silvia was mentored by Dr. Ellen Pikitch and contributed to the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Project, where she explored data collection technologies such as remote-operated vehicles for eDNA collection. Her hands-on work solidified her dedication to the field. After graduation, Silvia joined Columbia University as a lab technician, using cuttlefish as a model to understand neuroscience. Her role also involves husbandry tasks like feedings, water quality maintenance, and experimental support. Reflecting on her career shift, Silvia highlights the MCP program’s role in making the transition easy and rewarding. For Silvia, the opportunity to work directly with animals and create a new path in marine conservation has been the most fulfilling part of her journey.
