STRIDE Seminar Class Field Trip to Collapsing Bluff

MAR 534 students took a field trip to East Beach in Port Jefferson on April 25, 2022 with IACS Endowed Chair for Ecology and Evolution, Heather Lynch.

 

The group met with two current Village trustees, along with Lauren Sheprow (recently retired as Stony Brook University's Media Relations Officer) and Laura Schwanof from GEI Consultants, the engineering firm working on the East Beach Bluff stabilization plan.

 

Students got a tour of the collapsing bluff and the endangered buildings at the country club as part of  the seminar's focus this semester on coastal erosion and the science-policy challenges posed. It was a fun afternoon and a really great chance for the students to get a first row seat to some genuinely challenging science-policy issues.
