Students who do not complete the process by the deadline will not have on-campus housing. This is a two semester commitment (Fall and Spring).

Is there a housing deposit? When is the deadline to deposit by?

There is a $200 housing deposit that students pay in SOLAR. Students participating in EOP do not need to pay a housing deposit.

Deposits will not be accepted after 11:59 PM on May 1 for undergraduates and 11:59 PM on May 15 for graduate students. If you miss the deadline, please join the on-campus housing waitlist in the Housing Portal.

• • New undergraduate students who deposit by May 1 are prioritized for on-campus housing.
  • New graduate students who deposit by May 15 are prioritized for on-campus housing.
  • New transfer students can place a housing deposit by May 1 to indicate interest in on-campus housing, but they are not prioritized to live on campus. Spaces will be granted based on cancellations of other undergraduate students. Students with a farther home address from campus will have priority for housing.

What will the application consist of?

• • Agreeing to the Terms of Occupancy, Financial Liability
  • Meal Plan Information and Meal Plan Selection
  • Questionnaire to help facilitate roommate matching
  • Self-selection of your room space except for new graduates arriving earlier than August 1, Southampton Campus residents, Intensive English Center participants, International Academic Program participants, and new transfer students.

When will I apply?

The application will be accessible in the Housing Portal starting April 7, 2025. Applicants can only submit general application information prior to their designated room selection time frame. Additional details are below.

How do I apply?

Housing applications and many other transactions are completed via our Housing Portal. When the application goes live in April, you will need to submit your application on the New Student tab in the Housing Portal. You can log in to the Housing Portal with your NetID and password. You will not be able to log into your Housing Portal until the day after you set up your NetID and password with the University.

For specific information based on who you are, select the section that applies to you below

• New First-Year Student Information

  Where will I live?

  • New First Year students select a space in one of our three first year communities (H, Mendelsohn, and Roosevelt). All first year students should expect to live in a double occupancy corridor style room. There are limited singles in Roosevelt Community.
  • WISE or University Scholars program participants will live in Eleanor Roosevelt Community.
  • Honors College and Simons STEM Scholars participants will live in Yang Hall.
  • Gender Inclusive Housing participants will be able to select spaces in Benedict South Hall in H Community which is predominantly double rooms or in Stimson Hall in Eleanor Roosevelt Community which houses continuing and new students predominantly single rooms for GIH.

  When can I select a room assignment?

  First-year students can select a space after their room selection start time has passed, and must make a selection no later than Wednesday, June 11 at 4 PM:

  • Honors, Scholars, Simons STEM Scholars, and WISE Program Participants can start selecting a space on  Wednesday, May 21 at 11 AM.
  • All other first-year students can start selecting based on their eligibility outlined below: 
    • Students eligible to select female designated spaces can start selecting on Wednesday, May 28 at 11 AM.
    • Students eligible to select Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) designated spaces can start selecting on Thursday, May 29 at 11 AM.
    • Students eligible to select male designated spaces can start selecting on Friday, May 30 at 11 AM.

  Your room selection day and time is the first time you can go into the portal to make a selection. After that time has passed, you can enter the portal during our selection windows, between 11 AM - 9:59 PM, to select.

  The staggered times are used to assist with the amount of users in the portal selecting at a given time. Start times are randomized.

  What spaces can I select?

  • You will be able to select corridor style housing in our first year areas.
  • Gender Inclusive Housing Participants can only select in Stimson or Benedict South. 
  • Scholars and WISE participants can only select in Wagner, Keller, or Greeley.
  • Honors College and Simons STEM Scholars can only select in Yang.

  Once you select a space, your room assignment is final. If you are experiencing issues with your new roommate prior to move-in, please reach out to your Area Office and Residence Hall Director for further assistance. If you are experiencing issues with your new roommate after move-in, you can contact your Resident Assistant for help. A room change and swap period starts the third week of the semester but options may be limited.

  When do I move into my space?

  New first year students will move into their assigned space on August 18 or 19 in order to attend New Student Week of Welcome. See the Move-In Website for more details on preparing to move in and arrival dates.

  Can I request a single room?

  There are limited single rooms for first year students in Eleanor Roosevelt Community. Please have a conversation with anyone supporting you financially, regarding the potential additional expenses associated with being assigned a single occupancy room. In your application you will select your own space and if there is a single room available you may select it. If none are available, then you will not be able to select a single.

  How will I be able to select a roommate?

  In the application:

  • • You will answer questions about yourself and how you want your living environment.
    • You will be able to search for and communicate and with other students who are applying.

  • • You create a group or join a group of two individuals allowing either member to control your room assignment fully.  This is recommended for students that already know each other and are in close communication. If you give someone this control, your selection is final, even if they made the selection for you. 
• New Graduate Student Information

  Graduate Housing on-campus is in high demand. If new graduate student demand exceeds availability, students with a farther home address from campus will have priority for housing.

  Where will I live?

  New graduate students are housed in Chapin and Schomburg Apartments.

  When can I select a room assignment?

  New Graduate agreement holders can select a space between June 12 at 11 AM and June 19 at 4 PM.

  • Female/Gender-Inclusive Housing: Selection starts at 11 AM on June 12.
  • Male: Selection starts at 2 PM on June 12.

  Selections can only be made between 11:00 AM - 9:59 PM after your selection start date. All graduate students must select a space by June 19 at 5:00 PM.

  What spaces can I select?

  New graduate students may select a space from among Chapin and Schomburg Apartments. You will only select a space for yourself in this process.

  When do I move into my space?

  • Move-in Dates: New graduate students can move in between August 1 and August 24 from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • Late Arrivals: If you plan to arrive after 4:30 PM, contact your area office closer to your arrival date to arrange a late check-in between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM on the same day.
  • Weekend Move-ins: We recommend avoiding weekend move-ins since staff availability is limited to on-call only.
  • Early Arrivals: If you need to move in earlier than August 1 due to your program or personal needs, we will collect this information in your application and arrange an administrative placement.

  The university will coordinate bus arrivals from JFK Airport on certain dates in August. Those dates are not finalized at this time. Please wait to book your flight until you know those dates if you want to use that transportation to campus service. You will be able to adjust your arrival date until  July 21 at 12 PM.

  How will I be able to select a roommate?

  In the application, you will answer questions about yourself and how you want your living environment. You will be able to search for and communicate and with other students who are applying. You must coordinate making your room selection so that as one person finishes, the next person starts.

  • One of you must select the space and finish the booking process.
  • As soon as the first person finishes booking, the second person can add the same room to their "cart" and complete the booking process.
  • Occasionally, someone else may take that second bed space when you try to complete the second-person booking. If this happens, you must wait until the following room change or swap time frame to see if a change can be made. You cannot force the other person out of a selected assignment.
  • For different bedrooms in the same suite or apartment, all individuals can add their own bedroom at the same time in the shopping cart and select at the same time.
• New Transfer Student Information

  Is housing available for transfer students?

  All new transfer students can place a housing deposit by May 1 to indicate interest in on-campus housing, but they are not prioritized to live on campus. Spaces will be granted based on cancellations of other undergraduate students. Students with a farther home address from campus will have priority for housing.

  When will I know if I have housing?

  All transfers who completed the housing application by June 11 will be updated by July 1 on their likelihood of receiving an on-campus housing assignment. We anticipate most assignments being made by July 24 for anyone receiving an assignment.

  Can I select my roommate or room type?

  New transfer students are housed in continuing undergraduate residence halls where space is available.

  When do I move into my space?

  New transfer students: Move in on Thursday, August 21, between 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM to attend the New Student Week of Welcome.

  New Transfers who are international students participating in International Orientation should arrive on Tuesday, August 19, between 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

• Intensive English Center (IEC), and International Academic Program (IAP) Student Information

  Is housing available for IAP and IEC students?

  To be housed, Intensive English Center students must place a housing deposit by May 1 and complete the housing application by June 11. Spaces are held in our traditional corridor-style area.

  To be housed, International Academic Program students must complete the "Housing Intent" process in the Housing Portal by May 1 and the housing application by June 11. Spaces are held primarily in West Apartments, but some assignments may be made in suite-style residence halls pending demand.

  Can I select my roommate or room type?

  Students are housed through administrative placements and cannot choose their room or room type. Programs may collect interest in room type and Campus Residences consider this information when making assignments.

  When do I move into my space?

  International Academic Program students will move in on Monday and Tuesday, August 18 or 19,  between 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM at a designated arrival window. 

  Intensive English Center students will move in on Thursday, August 21, between 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

 What is Gender Inclusive Housing?

• • Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) is a housing option in which two or more students share a bedroom, suite, and/or apartment regardless of the student's sex, gender identity, or gender expression. In other words, this option allows for students of any gender identity to live together regardless of sex assigned at birth.
  • Choosing to live in Gender Inclusive Housing means that residents will have roommates and/or suitemates of any gender identity.
  • Residents in Gender Inclusive Housing are committed to creating and affirming a bias-free environment for everyone living in this community.
  • If you are interested in GIH, you can sign up in the Housing Portal within the published time frames.
  • Once that process is live, please review all information prior to submitting it. Once submitted, you have signed up to live in this community for the academic year. You will not be able to change rooms or swap rooms into gender-based male or female housing.
  • New Fall 2025 students will be able to sign up and see the GIH tab in the housing portal from  April 15 at 11:00 AM until May 19 at 5:00 PM. After May 19, sign-up is closed for the 2025-2026 academic year.
  • New First-Year Students' Gender Inclusive Community Important Notes:
    • This community is in Benedict South or Stimson regardless of Undergraduate College or Honors program.
    • If you sign up for this community regardless of your program, your room selection start day will be May 29 at 11:00 AM, so all GIH participants can sign up simultaneously.
    • Most participants in Benedict South will live in double rooms in a traditional corridor-style residence hall.
    • Most participants in Stimson will live in single occupancy rooms in a traditional corridor-style residence hall.
    • Signing up for GIH does not guarantee you a single room.

How do I cancel?

To cancel your upcoming reservation, log into the Housing Portal. In the Student Home section, you will see a “2025-2026 Housing Agreement Cancellation Request” button.

When do I need to cancel by?

Residents should wait to cancel until they are 100% sure they do not need housing for the upcoming year. If you paid a housing deposit, your deposit is applied against these charges. See the cancellation deadlines below:

What happens if I cancel but then later need housing?

Canceling your agreement will forfeit any priority you had in returning to campus housing. Choosing to cancel the housing reservation will require you to join a housing waitlist if future housing is needed. Waitlist approvals are made based on space availability and are not guaranteed. Depending on occupancy demand, some individuals may not be reached, and most offers tend to be during the spring semester.

What are my housing options if I am a new student who did not deposit by May 1 (May 15 graduate students) or did not finish my application by June 11 (June 19 graduate students)?

You will most likely not have on-campus housing. You can join the housing waitlist through the housing portal to potentially receive an offer if spaces become available. However, please be aware that we cannot estimate when and if offers might be made, so you should continue looking at off-campus options.
