Subject: Call for Facilitators and Chaperones - Seawolves Outdoor Adventure Program

Dear Faculty and Staff,

After a very successful pilot in 2021, we are once again offering the Seawolves Outdoor Adventure Program (SOAP), a wonderful opportunity for first year students to meet other incoming Seawolves, connect with faculty and staff, and build relationships before the semester begins. This year, we have 8 "adventures" available to students. Each one will focus on promoting personal growth, wellness, self-confidence, and relationship building.

To ensure the success of this program, we rely on facilitators and chaperones to help our newest Seawolves transition to college life. This year, we are seeking 16 facilitators and 42 chaperones to help with SOAP’s “Good, Clean Fun” activities, working with about 12 students per group. If you would like to volunteer to help, please read the information below and complete the interest form:

Facilitators

Facilitators help lead and facilitate small group activities, icebreakers, and team building activities. The time commitment includes:

  • Wednesday August 3 OR Tuesday, August 9, 11 am - 1 pm: To prepare facilitators, we will host a required two hour in-person training at the Recreation & Wellness Center.
  • Monday, August 15, 12-4 pm: Facilitators will lead small group activities. Lunch will be provided.

Chaperones

Chaperones interact with students in their assigned group, build a cohesive team, and strengthen a sense of belonging. They will also be a point of contact for students’ questions or concerns and assist with facilitating group activities. The time commitment includes:

  • Wednesday, August 3, 2-3 pm OR Tuesday, August 9, 1:30-2:30 pm: To prepare chaperones, we will host a required one hour zoom training.
  • Monday, August 15, 12-4 pm: Chaperones will interact and participate with the students in the team building activities/icebreakers. Lunch will be provided.
  • Tuesday, August 16, approximately 8 am-2:30 pm, depending on the activity. Lunch will be provided.

If you are interested in serving either as a facilitator or a chaperone and can commit to the obligations noted above, please fill out this interest formby Monday, July 18. If you are interested in being a chaperone, also select which off-campus trip you prefer to chaperone. Please visit the SOAP website for descriptions of each activity. Once you complete the interest form, we will contact you via email with updates by August 1.

If you have any questions, please contact Marie Turchiano at marie.turchiano@stonybrook.edu. For more information about SOAP, please visit https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/studentaffairs/rec/outdoor_adventure/
