Internships

Special Collections and University Archives has a leading role in developing research collections at Stony Brook University.  We are committed to providing excellent research experiences and learning opportunities. The scope of this commitment extends to experiential learning opportunities through internships (EXP 288 and EXP 488). Skills that can be acquired through internships include:

  • gaining knowledge of archival theory and best practices.

  • learning how to research and evaluate primary sources.
  • processing manuscript and archival collections (arrangement and description).

  • creating finding aids.

  • transcribing documents.

  • scanning and digitizing collections.
  • handling and shelving rare materials.

  • re-housing collections.

  • participating in reference services.

  • assisting with outreach activities, class visits, and tours.

Internship hours are scheduled between 9am and 4pm, Monday through Friday. Hours may be divided among other areas of the University Libraries depending on availability. Internships are open to SBU students and library science graduate students.  Applicants must be able to work independently and collaboratively. All internships are non-paid.
