Call for Papers

The Arabic Linguistics Society and Stony Brook University’s Department of Linguistics are pleased to announce the 30th Annual Symposium on Arabic Linguistics (ASAL). ASAL will take place in Stony Brook, New York, on March 31-April 3, 2016, and will be held concurrently with the 46th Annual Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL) and a joint Workshop on Arabic and Romance Linguistics.

Keynote Speakers, Workshop on Arabic and Romance Languages (WARL):

  • Laura Minervini, University of Naples
  • Lotfi Sayahi, SUNY Albany

Abstracts may be submitted for presentation in either ASAL or WARL.  For ASAL, papers are invited on topics that deal with theoretical and applied issues in Arabic linguistics. Research in the following areas is encouraged: linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics), sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, historical linguistics, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics. For WARL, research is encouraged in areas such as Romance/Arabic language contact, Romance/Arabic multilingualism, and Maltese linguistics.

Persons interested in presenting papers are requested to prepare an abstract following the guidelines for writing abstracts (click to download).

Fees:  Arabic Linguistics Society membership (required of all presenters):  $35 for students and $50 for non-students.

Registration fees (required of all attendees; includes admission to talks in ASAL, LSRL, and WARL):

  • Through February 19, 2016: $35 for students and $60 for non-students

The Arabic Linguistics Society (ALS) announces the ALS Best Student Abstract Award to be offered for the first time at the 30th ASAL at Stony Brook University in New York. The award carries a monetary prize ($300) and goes to the highest-ranked student abstract as determined by the anonymous abstract review process. To be considered for the award, select ‘Yes’ in response to the question ‘Are you a student?’ on the Abstract Submission page. Only abstracts for which all authors are students will be considered.
