Guiliano Fellow, Spring 2021
Project: Colorado Summer Seminar in Philosophy
The Guiliano Fellowship allowed me to attend the 2021 Colorado Philosophy Summer Seminar hosted by the University of Colorado at Boulder. This program provides advanced undergraduates with the experience of a graduate-level seminar. For three weeks, I was surrounded by 19 extremely passionate philosophy students, from the country and abroad, engaging in rigorous discussions and dissecting arguments around the topic of ethics and epistemology.
We read contemporary research papers on military ethics, doxastic freedom, moral encroachment, and epistemic injustice. We also read historical texts, such as Abu Hamid al-Ghazali’s Rescuer from Error, Descartes’ Meditations, and Plato’s Republic. Esteemed faculty of Boulder’s Philosophy Department taught the morning sessions which were focused on explicating the ideas from the assigned readings, while the afternoons were reserved for extracurricular events. These events included having panels on the experience of women in graduate school in Philosophy and women in the philosophy profession, as well as hearing from renowned philosophers talk about their new book or theory.
Those three weeks proved to be an eye-opening experience. Not only did I gain a better idea of what graduate school and life in academic philosophy looks like, but I also learned about the vast array of topics and problems that philosophy investigates and how relevant this research is in our lives and in our society. Furthermore, because this seminar focused on different topics in philosophy and different styles of doing philosophy that I was not familiar with, it exposed me to so many new interesting things to think about and new ways of thinking about them. Finally, I was inspired by the academic rigor of the program and by the intellectual curiosity, dedication, and precision in thinking that the professors, guest speakers, and my fellow seminarians exhibited. This experience has informed my view of philosophy and has influenced the intellectual activities that I plan to engage in during my senior year and beyond.
The College of Arts and Science’s Guiliano Fellowship gave me the financial support I needed to have this experience, and I am immensely grateful.
The Guiliano Global Fellowship Program offers students the opportunity to carry out
research, creative expression and cultural activities for personal development through
traveling outside of their comfort zone.
