  • About Program

    Standards

    1. Students must apply and be admitted to the Accelerated Program. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 upper-division Civil Engineering (CIV) courses at Stony Brook University (SBU) with a GPA of 3.25 or higher at the time of application. (Applicants interested in a graduate degree who do not meet these criteria are encouraged to apply directly to the Master of Science (MS) program.) The application must include approval by both the chairperson and the graduate program director of CIV.

    2. Students can double count a maximum of  6 credits of graduate courses toward the undergraduate and graduate portion of the Accelerated Program.

    3. Students must spend at least 1 year in full-time residency for the master's portion of the program and must earn a minimum of 30 graduate credits for the master's portion of the program. For comprehensive information regarding graduate degree requirements, see the Graduate Bulletin

    4. Students must complete a minimum of 105 undergraduate credits. All other undergraduate degree requirements remain in effect.

    5. The BE/MS is a sequential degree program, meaning you will remain an undergraduate student until you complete the undergraduate degree requirements.

    6. Undergraduate course credits may not be used to satisfy graduate degree requirements.

Procedure to Enroll in Graduate-Level Coursework

As an undergraduate student, SOLAR will not allow you to add your graduate classes directly. You need to obtain permission from the Graduate School first. Please follow these steps, at least 3 weeks before the semester starts:

    1. Complete the Permission for Undergraduate Students in an Accelerated or Combined Degree Program to Enroll in Graduate Course form.
      1. Email the filled form to Graduate Program Director (GPD) Ruwen Qin at ruwen.qin@stonybrook.edu, requesting approval.
      2. Send the signed form to Undergraduate Program Advisor Maria Moore at maria.moore@stonybrook.edu, requesting approval.
      3. Save the signed form. You will need it for the next step.
    2. Complete the Graduate School's Google form: Permission for Undergraduate Students in an Accelerated or Combined Degree Program to Enroll in a Graduate Course. This Google form will request that you upload email approvals from the undergraduate program advisor and GPD. This is where you will upload the signed pdf from Step 1.

Please note that students may elect to take all 6 credits of MS coursework in one semester, although it is not recommended. Unless you are enrolled in the Accelerated Program, a graduate course taken while an undergraduate student will not be counted toward the MS degree, even if you are later admitted into the MS program.

Upon Completion of Undergraduate Degree Requirements
