Graduate Studies In Civil Engineering at Stony Brook
The Department of Civil Engineering offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosopy degrees as well as an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering.
Master of Science (M.S.)
The 30-credit Civil Engineering M.S. program consists of approved graduate coursework with a thesis or project option. Most students complete this degree in 3 semesters.
- The M.S. project option requires an independent project (up to 6 credits of CIV 596) with a focus on innovative analysis or design.
- The M.S. thesis option is a more in-depth and more formal product than a project and it is research oriented (registered as 9 credits of CIV 599).
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The Civil Engineering Ph.D. program consists of approved graduate coursework and dissertation research. The main focus of the program is the research experience. A minimum of 24 graduate course credits beyond the M.S. degree are required.
The dissertation topic is dependent on the mutual research interests of the faculty adviser and the student. Please visit the department's research areas for more information
Advanced Graduate Certificate
This program is designed for working professionals or engineers from other disciplines interested in obtaining knowledge in civil engineering. This program is also a good fit for engineers looking to earn continuing professional development credits. To earn the advanced graduate certificate, 15 approved graduate credits are required.
As per Graduate School policy, 12 credits from the Advanced Certificate in Civil Engineering may be counted toward the M.S. degree in Civil Engineering.
Additional information and requirements for our graduate degrees and certificate in Civil Engineering can be found in our Graduate Bulletin. Interested applicants can also review our courses by going to the Civil Engineering Course Descriptions in the Graduate Bulletin.

- Q - Can the application fee be waived?A - You may request a fee waiver from gradadmissions@stonybrook.edu, but very few waivers are given.Q - I uploaded my transcript, do I really have to send an official paper transcript?A - Yes, please. If you are admitted and then you accept the offer, the Admissions Office will not finalize our offer without your official transcripts. Then, you have to submit them slowing the whole process down. If you are serious about attending Stony Brook University as a graduate student, please submit official documents.Q - Can I submit unofficial test scores?A - Official test score reports must be forwarded to Stony Brook University by the testing institution directly. For the GRE, the official reports must be sent by ETS directly to Graduate Admissions for Stony Brook University (Code: 2548) and the Department of Civil Engineering (Code: 1102). Self-reported test scores are considered unofficial and will not be accepted.Q - I submitted my application after the first deadline, but before the final deadline. Will I still be eligible for a scholarship or fellowship?A - Possibly, but when you apply after the priority deadline, especially for fall admissions, we have already determined most Teaching Assistant awards and submitted names for other Graduate School Fellowships. Submitting your application after the priority deadline leaves you with fewer scholarship opportunities. You may still be admitted to graduate school, however.Q - Does the Civil Engineering application have any supplemental documents that need to be uploaded or submitted?A - Not at this time.
