Stony Brook University Wins NYPA Outstanding Commitment to Energy Efficiency Award

Stony Brook University will be awarded the ‘Outstanding Commitment to Energy Efficiency’ award this year, on behalf of the New York Power Authority (NYPA). The University will receive this prestigious award at NYPA’s Customer Clean Energy Exchange event on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. This annual event recognizes NYPA customers for their leadership and innovation in advancing clean energy projects throughout New York State, while also gathering leaders in the field to provide keynote lectures and information on how organizations can continue to advance their clean energy transition.

Terence Harrigan, Associate Vice President of Campus Operations noted, “This well-deserved recognition for Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine is the results of our team’s collective efforts on numerous energy efficiency projects and sustainability measures. Through our commitments to reduce energy consumption, we have exceeded our EO 88 goals and led the state in our efforts.”

STONY BROOK’S ENERGY REDUCTION EFFORTS
Stony Brook was selected as a recipient of this award in large part as a result of the University’s commitment and continued focus on energy efficiency across our extensive campus footprint, consisting of 213 buildings, 13 million square feet, and 1,400 acres of land.

Beginning in 2012, SBU embarked on an aggressive strategy to reduce energy consumption and decrease greenhouse gas emissions through three Master Plans, developed in tandem with NYPA. As a result of these efforts, SBU has been able to achieve an estimated $16.9 million in annual cost savings while also reaching an annual electric savings of 43,171 MWh, thermal savings of 297,765 MMBtu, and chilled water savings of 5,023,411 Ton-hrs. This is equivalent to a greenhouse gas reduction of 40,274 tons of CO2. As Stony Brook continues to grow, we remain conscious about campus-wide energy use while also identifying new opportunities for energy efficiencies.
