Nicholas S. Fisher

Nicholas Fisher is Distinguished Professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences of Stony Brook University. Dr. Fisher is also the Director of the Consortium for Interdisciplinary Environmental Research(CIDER) at Stony Brook University. He has been a professor at Stony Brook since 1988.  Prior to that he was employed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (1986-1988), the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Marine Environment Laboratory in Monaco (1980-1985), the Ministry for Conservation of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia (1977-1980) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, MA (1974-1977) where he was a postdoctoral investigator.  Dr. Fisher received his B.A. in Biology at Brandeis University (1970) and his Ph.D. in Biology at Stony Brook (1974).

Dr. Fisher has received a number of prestigious awards and has published more than 200 papers in the general area of marine pollution and biogeochemical cycling of metals in the marine environment. His research has addressed the bioaccumulation of metals and metalloids in marine organisms and their impact on marine biota, as well as the influence of the biota on the speciation and fate of the metals in aquatic ecosystems. He serves on the editorial board of two prominent marine science journals, has served on the external advisory committees of several major research programs, and has chaired numerous national and international committees and symposia concerning marine pollution issues.  He has also been engaged in diverse consulting activities relating to marine pollution matters (primarily dealing with selenium, mercury, and long-lived radionuclides) and currently serves as a Special Master for the Federal Court in Maine.
