A Feel of Tehran

Tehran was first mentioned in historical accounts in an 11 ^th-century chronicle as a small village north of the city of Rayy, capital of the Seljuq empire. Rayy declined in importance following internal conflict and the Mongol invasion, and is now the suburb Shahr-e Rey in present-day Tehran.

Tehran’s population in recent years has exploded to eight million in the city proper and 14 million in the greater metropolitan area, making it the most populous city in western Asia.

Tehran is a major tourist destination, with its museums, palaces, and gardens dating back to the Qajar and Pahlavi dynasties, its labyrinthine Grand Bazaar , and its view of the spectacular Alborz Mountains.

Azadi Tower

The Azadi Tower (Persian: برج آزادی‎, Borj-e Āzādi ; "Freedom Tower"), formerly known as the Shahyad Tower ( برج شهیاد, Borj-e Šahyād ; "Shah's Memorial Tower"), is a monument located on Azadi Square. It is one of the landmarks of Tehran, marking the west entrance to the city, and is part of the Azadi Cultural Complex, which also includes an underground museum.

The tower is about 45 metres (148 ft) tall and is completely clad in cut marble. It was commissioned by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, to mark the 2,500th year of the foundation of the Imperial State of Iran and completed in 1971.

Vali-e-Asr Street

Valiasr Street (Persian : خیابان ولی‌عصر ‎) or Pahlavi Street (Persian : خیابان پهلوی ‎) is a tree-lined street , dividing the metropolis into western and eastern parts built in 1922 to 1927. It is considered one of Tehran's main thoroughfares and commercial centres. It is also the longest street in the Middle East.
