Research Opportunities

Below are listings of research opportunities for undergraduates with laboratories on campus at Stony Brook University, at nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory, or with local companies. Each position is noted as either a paid position, a research opportunity for undergraduate academic credit (with the course designator given), or as an internship. Please email the contact listed for more information. If you are intending to use the research as part of the Nanotechnology Studies minor (NTS), please contact Prof. Halada as well.

Note: Please contact individual laboratories (see the listing under Laboratories) for research opportunties. In many cases, evem if a research opportunity is not listed on a laboratory web site, speakign with the faculty member in charge will reveal some opportunity to participate in their ongoing research!

  1. Undergraduate research opportunity:

Earn 3 credits of ESM 299 or ESM 499 by taking part in a directed or independent study of 3D printed nanocomposites for engineering applications. Learn about advanced electrochemical, spectroscopic and additive manufacturing techniques while helping to study new materials for engineering and medical applications. Contact Prof. Halada at Gary.Halada@stonybrook.edu .

  2. Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA) program:

    URECA Grants/Fellowships

URECA provides support to SB students engaged in faculty-mentored research and/or creative activities in all disciplines. Students are encouraged to apply for:

URECA Summer (applications due mid-March) and/or Explorations in STEM: a URECA-Career Center program (applications due mid-March)

URECA Small/Travel Grants (applications accepted all year round)

For more information, check our website and contact Karen Karen and/or Brian Frank if you have any questions.

  3. Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (Brookhaven National Laboratory)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has established a national program to give research experience in areas of chemistry, physics, engineering, biology, nuclear medicine, applied mathematics, high- and low-energy. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) offers student appointments though a national program titled the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) developed through DOE. Participants will be placed with members of the scientific and professional staff in an educational program developed to give research experience in areas such as chemistry, high- and low-energy physics, engineering, biology, nuclear medicine, applied mathematics.
