What is your current job or career? How satisfied are you with said position?
I’m currently a postdoctoral researcher at Stony Brook University. I enjoyed my current job very much, as it offers me opportunities for growing as a research scientist and engagement with the marine conservation community in China—my home country.

What was your involvement in PCLP?
I participated in PCLP as a group member in 2015. Then I became a co-leader of the STRIDE-PCLP group in 2017.

Did you obtain a job within the career field you focused on during your tenure in PCLP? If not, what important lessons did you learn from your PCLP directed career exploration?
I explored career opportunities in management consulting and pharmaceutical industry from 2015 to 2017. I had an internship offer from a bio-tech startup to help them with managing their clinical trial data. I did not accept the offer due to schedule conflicts. I eventually decided to take my current job because I would like to continue to do more research. The important experience I gained is that my own career exploration will always be an on-going process because the field I’ve chosen (Marine Sciences research and education) is constantly evolving in a global scale.

Have you used any of the skills or knowledge you gained through PCLP in your job search or in your job?
I have used the approach of information interview, networking skills, resume and LinkedIn profile.

Reflecting on the program, what part of PCLP proved to be the most useful?
The step-based curriculum developed by PCLP gave me valuable guidance.

How did having a cohort of students with similar motivations about career development assist your efforts?
Through PCLP, I participated in the consulting club and went to case competition, conferences, and many other events with the fellow students that I met there. I learned a lot about management consulting with them. The six of us stay connected and meet from time to time to catch up on our career exploration and other aspects in life.

How else has being involved with PCLP affected your career or career interests?
Aside from the specific skills I learned from PCLP, the fellow students and career mentors I met through the program will always be the people that I learn and get guidance from.

What advice would you give to current or future PCLP members?
Keep exploring and sharing. There are so many fun, stimulating opportunities in various fields for graduate students now. No matter which field you eventually choose, the exploration process, learning and growing with a group of like-minded friends are truly wonderful experience. Have fun and good luck!
