Dear Postdocs,

Our next postdoc community event is Jan 16th, with the Postdoc Winter Social. Join us to celebrate the New Year and meet postdocs outside your lab. New postdocs are especially encouraged to come, and come by early at 3pm for an orientation and introduction to the postdoctoral experience at Stony Brook. Details are below.

Also, Stony Brook can nominate up to 15 postdocs for the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists' $30k cash prize. Campus deadline for nominations for this limited competition is Jan 12, 2018.

The Welcome offers an introduction to Stony Brook to help recently arrived postdocs maximize their postdoctoral experience. All postdocs who have joined us in the past six months are particularly encouraged to attend.

All postdocs who have arrived within the past six months are invited to:

• Learn about resources & benefits for SBU postdocs
• Meet the staff and faculty who can help you make the most of your time at Stony Brook

The Postdoc Winter Social for all postdocs will begin at 4pm in the Chapel. We hope you'll stay for the chatting and networking!
Refreshments will be served. 

WHERE:  Wang Center Chapel

The Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) is a venue for outstanding Long Island students in grades 9-12 to submit and exhibit their research projects in an effort to identify and select finalists from over 500 student participants to compete at the annual International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

The fair is in need of judges.

For postdocs, judging is a great professional development opportunity to add your CV and expand your network with other local scientists.

The Department of Biology at the State University of New York at Old Westbury invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Biology starting Fall 2018. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Microbiology or related discipline, an excellent teaching record, postdoctoral experience, a recent publication track record in the field of Microbiology and excellent potential for extramural funding.  We seek a highly trained individual who is committed to a liberal arts education working with a culturally diverse student population and can demonstrate excellence in teaching and research.  Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses (Master's level), including non-science major's courses, introductory biology courses for biology majors, and introductory and advanced courses in Microbiology.  The candidate will be expected to develop a strong extramurally funded research program that includes undergraduate students.  Involvement in college service is also expected.  

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program honors female scientists at a critical stage in their careers with grants of $60,000 each. Since 2003, they’ve awarded 70 postdoctoral women scientists over $3.5 million in grants. They are seeking five exceptional female scientists looking to advance their research and serve as role models for the next generation of girls in STEM.

The New York Academy of Sciences Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists acknowledge and celebrate the excellence of the most noteworthy young scientists and engineers in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The regional competition recognize outstanding postdoctoral-rank researchers who work in disciplines in the life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering with unrestricted financial prizes for both finalists and awardees.

Three winners will each receive $30,000 in unrestricted funds and six finalists will each receive $10,000 in unrestricted funds. 

THIS IS A LIMITED COMPETITION. Stony Brook University may only nominate up to 15 postdocs for this award each year, and those postdocs must have publications from the postdoc already to be competitive.
