Preserving Stony Brook's Core Values

December 6, 2024

Dear Stony Brook Campus Community,

I am writing to you with deep concern regarding recent events on our campus that are threatening the inclusive and supportive environment we strive to maintain here at Stony Brook, particularly those related to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

The use of certain hurtful imagery, language, and behaviors has left many in our community feeling unwelcome and unsafe. This has contributed to a rise in Title VI investigations by our Office of Equity and Access (OEA), and to an atmosphere of heightened anxiety that is not conducive to learning or working and is an affront to our university’s core values.

The OEA will carefully review and investigate whether specific actions taken recently have violated university policies. However, let me state clearly: antisemitic, Islamophobic, and other forms of hateful behavior purposely designed to intimidate and instill fear have no place at Stony Brook.

At the heart of Stony Brook’s mission is the commitment to providing opportunities for underserved and minority communities while fostering a campus where people from diverse cultures, religions, races, nationalities, and political perspectives come together. Our diversity can either divide us or unite us — it can be a source of conflict or a foundation for tolerance, discovery, intellectual growth, and mutual respect.

We must choose the path of unity and respect. I understand how difficult this can feel during a time of profound pain and suffering, but it is essential to preserving the fabric of our community. This choice does not mean setting aside deeply held beliefs or silencing voices. Instead, it calls for seeing humanity in one another, approaching differences with humility, and ensuring that our interactions reflect decency and care. Together, let’s break this cycle.

I will continue reaching out to various groups and individuals, and to engage in dialogue even if we cannot always agree. I will also ensure that the university’s rules and policies are enforced so that every member of our community feels safe and welcome at Stony Brook. I ask each of you to continue to do your part as well.

Thank you for all you do for Stony Brook.

Sincerely,

Richard L. McCormick
Interim President
