Application Roadmap

STEP1Apply to Stony Brook University using the Common App or the SUNY App.  Apply by the Stony Brook University Early Action Deadline (Nov 1) to guarantee your application gets reviewed by the various university honors programs. It is highly encouraged to apply to SBU by October 25 due to potential delays with the activation of your student portal to avoid any late application submissions. All students in the Simons STEM Scholars program must be admitted into their major of choice at SBU to be admitted to the program.

STEP2Apply to the Simons STEM Scholars program by November 1. Applicants must submit a document containing a response to our three short response essay prompts (250 words each), and have a reccomender submit a program specific letter of recommendation on their behalf. The application can be found in your SBUStart Portal (portal will open in September). Our essay prompts are as follows:

"Tell us more about yourself; in particular, how your academic, extracurricular and life experiences have influenced your desire to pursue a career in STEM. Additionally, explain how the Stony Brook Simons STEM program will help you achieve these goals."

"Please tell us how pursuing a Phd in STEM will help you achieve your educational and professional aspirations?"

"Why is the advancement of historically underrepresented groups in STEM fields important?"

STEP3 Students advancing in the selection process will be notified by late January - early February.  Students must commit to attend a Selection Weekend by the date listed in the invitation email.
STEP4Attendance at Selection Weekend is mandatory for students to be considered for the program. Selection Weekends are slated by the date listed in the invitation email. Students will only attend one weekend.  For out of state students, or students outside of the NYC Metro area, there is a virtual attendence option.
STEP5Students will be notified of program decisions in early April.
STEP6Admitted students are required to attend a full-funded 6-week Summer Bridge program starting in early summer, where they will begin their journey as a Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholar.
