Feb. 1, 2018 — As an extension to their studies, students from Port Jefferson's Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifth-grade art club had the chance to view unique works of art during a recent visit to the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts.
During the field trip, Karen Levitov, director and curator for the gallery, spoke with the students about the "Double Portrait" exhibit that featured the work of Charley Friedman and Nancy Friedemann-Sanchez. Ms. Levitov spoke about the techniques and inspiration behind the artists' works, which included quirky sculptures, drawings, video and photographs.

"The students had the opportunity to examine and discuss artwork that appeared visually different but upon further investigation, had similar content," elementary art teacher Meghan Hallock, who accompanied the students on the trip along with art teacher Richard Anderson. "Through these artists they've come to understand that a self-portrait can be nonrepresentational and look forward to making their own."
