Modern artist Kate Gilmore climbs up, kicks through and slides across large-scale structures that resemble dangerous looking playgrounds. Gilmore presents herself with a challenge to overcome with her physical strength and brightly-colored paints.

“She takes an idea that we can all relate to– the struggle to overcome a challenge– and creates a beautiful, meaningful image,” Karen Levitov, the director of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery said.

Levitov first encountered Gilmore’s work in an art gallery in the Lower East Side of New York City in 2008.

“I knew I wanted to have a Kate Gilmore solo show for my first major exhibition here,” Levitov said. “I contacted Gilmore and requested a studio visit and we started discussing ideas for a show.”

Gilmore, known for her large-scale sculptural structures and artistic performance pieces, shared her work at the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery in the Staller Center on Sept. 27.

Gilmore’s  work is displayed in The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Contemporary art in Chicago and in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
