GREEN INITIATIVES
ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY BUILDING SERVICES
Whenever possible, Stony Brook University's building services team aims to procure and use green cleaning and sanitizing products in order to promote working and living conditions that are clean and safe, as well as minimize the University's impact to the environment.
ELECTRICAL AND ENERGY EFFICIENCIES
Stony Brook University's Sustainability Department, recently released a proprietary Energy Dashboard that displays real-time energy usage across each building on campus, paving the way for future energy-reduction projects and initiatives. Many of our campus buildings also utilize motion-sensor lighting, which allows for classrooms and other areas to be lit only when occupied, and save energy when not in use. Along Stony Brook's grounds, you'll also see many speed indicator signs powered by solar.
GROUNDS & MAINTENANCE GREENHOUSES
Stony Brook is home to a 60'x25' greenhouse that cultivates most of the annual plants used on campus. By growing these annuals in our very own greenhouse, we are able to recycle materials already in inventory, save energy and reduce the University's carbon footprint. The greenhouse is also outfitted with a rainwater harvesting system which catches and stores rainwater, enhancing the University's water conservation efforts. This water is used later to irrigate the plants growing inside our greenhouse.
RESTROOM WATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS
Across Stony Brook University's restrooms, the Plumbing shop has undertaken an effort conserve water by utilizing low flow or waterless urinals. Zero water is used in a waterless system, and the low flow units have a reduction of 80% water used during each flush.
KEEPING CONSTRUCTION SITE SPOILS ON SITE
Stony Brook University houses a 2.5 acre facility to recycle/store resources created from excavation or construction sites on campus. Soil, asphalt, brick, concrete, scrap metal and wood are stored in this facility, and re-purposed whenever possible during new construction projects.
BIKE SHARE PROGRAM
Stony Brook University’s Wolf Ride Bike Share system was designed to reduce emissions by augmenting existing SBU transit services with a healthy, environmentally-friendly alternative. The system consists of 14 smart station kiosks strategically placed across campus that support a fleet of almost 100 bicycles.
